Funny, when I showed the preliminary drawing of the ectostang to a former boss, she said I had too much time on my hands too! Lol. Your ecto looks great though, might I give you a warning, make sure your alternator can handle the pull of those lightbars, or else you'll be buying a new alternator whether you want to or not :)

yea you wanna make sure the alternator is larger..its the same thing that ford does to the police Interceptors.. The pursuit package has a larger alternator, better shocks, bettor motor mounts, etc.. stuff to allow it to take more abuse.. my dad was a chief of police.. and yea if you dont get a larger alternator.. it will run your battery down too..

do you have to get any type of permits for having all the lights and stuff on the car.. much less running the lights.. or is it a state by state thing.. I mean here in Tx.. I think Yellow is ok to run for everyday stuff like security Gaurds or Escorts.. Red and Blue is cops , Red is fire dept, blue is water I thought not sure on that one.. Anyway.. guess I need to ask my dad sometime.. but was wondering if anyone has encountered this.. I mean this would be fun to drive in parades also..

its more city by city than anything, or at least it is here in illinois. like chicago, you better not even think of entering city limits with out trying to get some kind of permit to allow you to have the blue lights. but typically you should be able to get a permit to use them for parades. otherwise, well up here that is, as long as you have your ecto parked you can run the lights. you'll need to check about sirens too although that may be a total bust for anyhting else other than a parade.

It's actually a STATE thing, with cities as usual being able to make even tighter laws as they see fit...

The use of red, blue or white, lighted or OFF, CAN not be used on a regular automobile in Illinois...

Actually I've been talking to Joliet cops as well as Illinois police, they told me that as long as the lights are NOT operational on your vehicle, and your car cannot be mistaken easily for a police vehicle, you're perfectly legal having them on the car. You can only have them on while on private property. I'm going to have blue lights on the ecto stang, just like in the movie, and I'll probably put a cover on it while cruising around town. I just got a new alternator (Ow, my wallet) and instead of the typical Ford alternator that makes 80 amps, which well provides for the car and the new stereo :D the new one's 105 amps, giving me a good 25 to play with at the least.

What I was told when I picked up the light bars at a store which sold new and used fire equipment was that I shouldn't be bothered by police because It does not look like a police car. No Ghost logo, roof rack, and decorated like an Ecto I think people will no what it is. Now as for the use of the lights I have asked many police officers in passing the laws for the use of my lightbars. All of them said this. Its ok to have them but dont put them on while driving. Now if I am in a public parking lot or any other public property parked and I decided to flip the switch to turn them on It should not be a big deal however if the cop is a ball buster he could write me a ticket. On my privite property I could do what ever the hell I want.

Now for those of you who told me about the altinater. Thanks. You reminded me. Its been a long prosses. Its been going on a year now since I have had it. Making repairs and decking it out. All that great stuff that goes along with an Ecto recreation. Kissing my Money good bye... but to see the faces of kids and Adults who remember The Ghostbusters as I drive by. Its Priceless.

Yeah, you can have it parked on the street as long as it's not IN MOTION the other lights are something you can have on, siren too. No problem on the alternator, I know if you overwork one, you can screw up a bearing and have a real problem on your hands (I know from exp) the thing will work, but if the car has other wierd noises/problems, you won't be able to hear it over the loud whine of the bad bearings.

Ecto96 regardless of what the cops told you, I posted a link to the Illinios law...

It states no exclusions for non-operational, and in fact it is quite clear that regardless of on/off status they are illegal...

It will all boil down to the cop that pulls you over, but the law is clear as it's written they can't be there unless you meet the criteria set forth...

I beleive you, didn't say I didn't. I just know mostly what I've been told. The cop would probably would have to be a real pri** to give you a ticket, and I know in illinois, hey there's plenty of them out there! So yeah you're right, would depend on the cop I guess.

Custom bending plexiglass is a b!^<# though.

Russ I'm pretty sure you can get clear lenses.. Using the internet there's just about nothing you can't find. The colored lenses would be easy, just paint the bulbs inside the thing to the color you want, using the correct type of paint.
